“ChatGPT does not work properly for me” is a common complaint. Often, the real problem is an underspecified task. A request such as “Write something about Linux” leaves the audience, scope, structure, and purpose open.
Explain the difference between apt, pacman, and dnf to a Linux beginner in no more than 500 words. Use simple examples and a comparison table.
The improved request defines the subject, audience, length, style, and format.
What is a prompt?
A prompt is the question, instruction, or goal you give an AI system. It does not need special syntax or a rigid formula. It needs the information that can materially change the result.
Five useful prompt components
1. Role or perspective
Use a role when a particular professional perspective or level of expertise matters.
2. Task
State the desired result directly: explain, compare, analyze, review, summarize, or draft.
3. Context
Provide relevant background, sources, constraints, and current conditions. Avoid unrelated detail.
4. Output
Name the format, length, audience, structure, and level of detail you need.
5. Boundaries
Say what must remain unchanged, what to avoid, and when ChatGPT should ask before taking action.
Context matters more than a “super prompt”
“Which Linux distribution should I use?” is too broad. Mention hardware, experience, update preference, software, and priorities to make the recommendation useful.

Define the audience
“Explain DNS to a child” and “Explain DNS to a system administrator focused on troubleshooting” require very different language and depth.
Expose uncertainty
Ask the model to identify missing information, separate assumptions from verified facts, and avoid inventing details. This does not eliminate errors, so important results still require verification.

Break large tasks into stages
- Define the goal.
- Review a proposed plan.
- Complete focused subtasks.
- Check the combined result against the original requirements.

A reusable template
You are [role]. Your task is [task]. Context: [relevant information]. Audience: [audience]. Return the result as [format]. Follow [rules and boundaries]. If essential information is missing, ask or clearly identify uncertainty.
Conclusion
A good prompt is not necessarily long. It contains the goal, context, audience, output requirements, and boundaries that matter for the task.
